3D Printing Materials Guide: Choosing the Right Material for Your Project

When ordering a 3D printed part, choosing the right material is just as important as the design itself. Different materials offer different strengths, finishes, and use cases. At REALM 3D Lab, we work with commonly used, reliable materials to ensure consistent, production-quality results.

Below is a simple guide to help you understand the most common 3D printing materials and when to use them.

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is one of the most widely used 3D printing materials and is a great choice for many projects.

Best for:

  • Prototypes

  • Display parts

  • General-purpose prints

  • Lightweight components

Benefits:

  • Smooth surface finish

  • Accurate detail

  • Cost-effective

  • Easy to print

Things to consider:PLA is not ideal for high heat or heavy mechanical stress. It’s best suited for indoor use and non-load-bearing applications.

PLA+ (Enhanced PLA)

PLA+ is an improved version of standard PLA, offering better strength and durability while maintaining good print quality.

Best for:

  • Functional prototypes

  • Light-duty parts

  • Improved strength over standard PLA

Benefits:

  • Stronger than standard PLA

  • Good surface quality

  • Reliable dimensional accuracy

Things to consider:While stronger than PLA, it still isn’t ideal for high-temperature environments.

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol)

PETG offers a balance between strength, flexibility, and durability, making it a popular choice for functional parts.

Best for:

  • Functional components

  • Light outdoor use

  • Parts needing some flexibility

Benefits:

  • Strong and durable

  • More heat-resistant than PLA

  • Moisture resistant

Things to consider:PETG can show more surface shine and stringing, but it performs well for real-world applications.

ABS / ASA

ABS and ASA are more advanced materials commonly used for stronger, more heat-resistant parts.

Best for:

  • Functional parts

  • Automotive or workshop components

  • Higher-temperature environments

Benefits:

  • Strong and impact resistant

  • Better heat resistance

  • Suitable for demanding applications

Things to consider:These materials require controlled printing conditions and may show more visible layer lines.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Filaments (PLA-CF / PETG-CF)

Carbon fiber–reinforced materials add stiffness and strength to standard filaments.

Best for:

  • Structural parts

  • Brackets and mounts

  • Parts requiring rigidity

Benefits:

  • Increased stiffness

  • Reduced flex

  • Professional, matte finish

Things to consider:Carbon fiber materials are stiffer but not flexible and are best used where rigidity is required.

Choosing the Right Material

The right material depends on how the part will be used. When submitting your file, consider:

  • Will the part be exposed to heat?

  • Does it need to be strong or flexible?

  • Is appearance or function more important?
